Course Objectives

After completion of this course personnel should be able to:

• Identify key chemical spill prevention steps
• Review a chemical safety data sheet for hazard assessment and emergency response information
• Understand the concepts of dynamic risk assessment
• Know when it is too dangerous to tackle a chemical spill
• Assess and categorise a chemical spill
• Respond appropriately to chemical incidents – Spills, personal contamination and drench equipment
• Use lab chemical emergency equipment such as drench equipment and chemical spill kits safely

Applicability

This course is aimed at all personnel working with chemicals in laboratories, work rooms, industrial settings etc.  Up to 15 delegates can attend.

Documentation

Full course handouts will be provided to participants. A course evaluation report will be provided after the course with copies of evaluation forms and signed attendance sheets. Participants will receive course certificates on completion.

• Chemical emergency information
• Dynamic risk assessment
• Chemical spill classification and response
• Personal protective equipment requirements for chemical emergencies
• Table top exercise based on chemical spill incident CCTV footage
• Dealing with spilled liquids, solids and compressed gas leaks
• Chemical spill scenarios - Table top exercises based on dealing with chemicals used on the client site
• Treatment of injured or contaminated persons
• Review of chemical spill kit contents and use
• Practical session on drench equipment use in work area
• Practical spill team based scenarios/drills in the work area
