Course Objectives

After completion of this course personnel should be able to:

• Understand the legal requirements for risk assessment
• Discern the importance of risk assessment in effective risk management
• Use key risk assessment inputs to carry out a suitable risk assessment
• Identify hazards in the workplace
• Assess the risk of workplace activities and Identify who might be harmed
• Carry out a risk assessment and assist in the implementation of a risk assessment programme
• Use risk rating systems
• Implement risk reduction measures and manage risk assessment findings

Applicability

This course is aimed at all personnel working with chemicals in laboratories, work rooms, industrial settings etc.  Up to 15 delegates can attend.

Documentation

A course manual on risk assessment and full course handouts will be provided to participants.  A course evaluation report will be provided after the course with copies of evaluation forms and signed attendance sheets. Participants will receive course certificates on completion.

Half day (3.5 hours).

• Introduction to a defined risk assessment process (e.g. OSHAS 18001)
• Risk assessment legal requirements and case law
• Hazard identification – key inputs
• Risk assessment and prioritisation - key inputs
• Use of quantitative risk rating systems
• Chemical risk assessment – chemical life cycle and evaluating chemical hazards
• Chemical risk assessment practical exercise on a site chemical related task
• Equipment/task risk assessment - EN ISO 12100 risk assessment checklist
• Risk reduction measures – hierarchy of control
• Task/equipment risk assessment - practical exercise on a site equipment related task
• Implementing and managing risk assessment findings – Documenting and preparing an action plan
• Monitoring and reviewing risk assessments
